Coconut Oil Shampoo Recipes

Just as coconut oil nourishes the skin and the body, it also nourishes the hair. Coconut oil shampoo has been used for millennia as a conditioner and treatment for healthy hair and a healthy scalp.

Now, science is beginning to catch up with the trend. A study published in 2001 determined that coconut oil penetrates the human hair shaft while mineral oil does not.

The researchers stated: The affinity of the penetrant to the protein seems to be the cause for this difference in their behavior. This study also indicates that the swelling of hair is limited by the presence of oil. Since the process of swelling and de- swelling of hair is one of the causes of hair damage by hydral fatigue, coconut oil, which is a better penetrant than mineral oil, may provide better protection from damage by hydral fatigue.

Again, the petroleum product poses risks and danger to health and the natural coconut oil is safe, and also more effective at protecting the hair from damage.

Simple to Make Homemade Shampoos and Deep Conditioners for Hair

Shampoo and hair care products are extremely personal and cover a wide range of solutions. From scalp treatments and anti-dandruff shampoos to shampoos designed for different hair types, bleached or colored hair – the selection seems endless.

Coconut-based shampoo goes in a completely different direction. They are simple and often derived from basic coconut oil and milk soap recipes.

Many women, particularly those with very soft baby-fine hair complain that the “superfatted” coconut soap bar shampoo does not leave their hair as manageable as they would like. The following very simple shampoo recipe may work better for those with very fine fly-away hair.

Homemade Coconut Milk Shampoo

Ingredients

  • ½ cup coconut milk
  • ⅔ cup your favorite scented or plain liquid castile soap
  • 1 tsp. or the contents of about 5 capsules of vitamin E oil
  • You will also need a plastic squeeze bottle or small jar with lid.

Directions: To create your own signature scented shampoo, use unscented castile soap and add 30 to 40 drops of any combination of your favorite essential oils. (Check the essential oils chart at the end of this section for best choice by hair type.)

If you don’t have vitamin E capsules or oil, jojoba, olive or sweet almond oil will work fine. Almond oil is also naturally high in vitamin E.

Mix the ingredients into the plastic squeeze bottle, or small jar with a lid, and shake well. Use a small amount, about the size of a quarter, poured into your palm and then work into your hair to start, adding more if needed. Use up the bottle within about a week. Store it in a cool cupboard, or under the bathroom sink.

Deep Healing Coconut Oil Treatment for Damaged Hair

An excellent treatment for dull damaged split ends, hair worn out from winter dryness or too much summer sun is an overnight coconut oil treatment. It’s simple and effective and it’s easy to do. It’s also rumored to ‘cure’ dandruff.

Ingredients

  • 2 to 4 Tbsp. virgin coconut oil
  • You will also need a bath towel, a bowl of warm water, and another bowl to set in the warm water and hold the coconut oil. Optional tools: a wide tooth comb and a shower cap.

Directions: Warm up two to four tablespoons of coconut oil in a small dish. How much you need will depend on the length of your hair. Place a mediumsized bath towel across your shoulders so that your back and shoulders are covered.

Then simply pour small amounts of the oil into the palms of your hands and begin to stroke the oil through your hair, starting at the scalp and working your way toward the ends. Use your fingers to distribute the oil to all the individual hair shafts. Be sure to rub the oil into your scalp all around your head as well.

Then gather up all the hair on top of your head in a twist and place a shower cap over your hair to hold it in place. Or, bend forward, gather all your hair together and use the towel to wrap the hair like a post-shower turban. Either way, start with the towel draped across your shoulders to avoid getting the oil on your clothing.

Leave the oil in your hair for at least an hour. Or apply the treatment just before bed and leave it in overnight. When the treatment is done, wash and condition your hair as normal. You will be amazed at the results. This is a great treatment to use regularly for healthy and lustrous hair. You’ll learn how long to go between treatments by watching the condition of your hair.

Another variation of the deep warm oil hair treatment is the hair mask. These treatments are generally put on the hair for 30 minutes to an hour and then washed out with normal or mild shampooing.

Coconut Oil and Honey Hair Mask

Ingredients

  • 1 Tbsp. Organic Coconut Oil
  • 1 Tbsp. Organic Raw Honey

You will also need a bowl of warm water, and another bowl to set in it, a spoon, a shower cap (a plastic wrap or produce bag also works), and a small brush (optional).

Directions: Place a small amount of warm water into one of the bowls. Place the coconut and oil in the other bowl, and place that bowl on top of the bowl with warm water. Allow the warm water to soften and melt the coconut oil.

As the oil softens, mix the oil and honey with the spoon until thoroughly mixed. Then use an old basting brush, paint brush or a silicone pastry brush (or your fingers) to brush the mix into the hair one section at a time.

Massage the mask into your scalp, and gently gather and squeeze the hair to get it evenly spread throughout all your hair.

Cover your head with the shower cap. Leave the mask in for 30 minutes to an hour. Then wash out with a mild shampoo.

Remember to rinse with cool to cold water after washing the hair to close the hair follicles and give your hair even more shine.

Avocado Coconut Oil Hair Mask with Essential Oil

Looking for coconut oil for dry scalp? This shorter treatment is also incredible and will leave your hair luscious, full and shiny. Brings dull, dry hair back to life in a snap.

Ingredients

  • 1 medium-sized ripe avocado
  • 2 Tbsp. warmed coconut oil
  • 20 drops of any one of these essential oils for dry hair: geranium, lavender, rosemary or sandalwood
  • You will also need a bowl of warm water, and another bowl to set in it, a small fork for mashing the ingredients together, a shower cap (a plastic wrap or produce bag also works), and a small brush (optional).

Directions: Place a small amount of warm water into one of the bowls. Place the ingredients in the other bowl, and place that bowl on top of the bowl with warm water. Allow the warm water to soften and melt the coconut oil. As the oil softens, mix the ingredients with a small fork until thoroughly incorporated.

Then use an old basting brush, paint brush or a silicone pastry brush (or your fingers) to brush the paste into the hair one section at a time.

This mask will leave your hair soft and very full. The essential oils chosen here all work very well to treat dry hair and are great for the scalp. Lavender and Rosemary are good for healing dandruff. Geranium, lavender and rosemary stimulate hair growth. They all smell wonderful and leave hair shiny and full.

Does coconut oil makes your hair grow faster?

Coconut oil is a natural way to help your hair grow longer, thicker, and faster. The vitamins and essential fatty acids naturally found in coconut oil nourish the scalp and help to remove sebum build-up from hair follicles.

Coconut Oil as a Moisturizing Finish to Bathing and Shampooing

Coconut oil is natural first aid for skin and hair. Use it after bathing and shampooing to nurture your skin and hair. Just use small dabs on the palm of your hand and work the oil into your skin from head to toe. Use sparingly in your hair until you learn what just the right amount is to avoid using too much and getting the ‘greaser’ look.

One way to do this is to start at the tips of longer hair and work your way back up to the scalp, a tiny bit is all you need unless your hair is very dry and damaged, in which case start with the deep healing treatment first.

The vitamin E content alone is a surefire way to give your skin and hair exactly what it needs. Vitamin E, lauric, capric and caprylic acids and protein are the ingredients that give your skin and hair new life.

Voilà! Now you know how to make homemade coconut oil shampoo and other hair care products. In addition, I believe that coconut oil for hair loss and coconut oil for dandruff will also have positive results; hence, consider the coconut whenever you are going to make shampoo.
