Coconut oil benefits for babies
Do you know that coconut is also good for infants? Yes indeed! In today’s article, let’s explore 3 fascinating coconut oil benefits for babies.
1.Cradle Cap, Diaper Rash
For cradle cap, gently massage a small amount of coconut oil into baby’s scalp each night before bed. Use a soft brush to gently brush the scalp and help loosen dry flaking dead skin. You can also use a warm moist wash cloth to wash baby’s head after applying the coconut oil to help wash off the dead flaking skin. Do not try to ‘pick’ or forcefully remove the cradle cap other than with a soft brush or by washing with a warm wet washcloth.
For diaper rash, just gently apply a layer of warm softened coconut oil to the clean affected area. You can take a small amount of coconut oil in your hands to warm it and make it more slippery first. In our family we have found this to be the best cure for baby’s diaper rash bar none. It has been completely successful within a matter of days every time, even when expensive prescription creams did not work at all. As an added benefit it is completely non-toxic and healthy for the baby, and introduces no drugs or toxins to the waste water.
2. Candida Albicans, Yeast Infections and Thrush
Thrush is another of those infections susceptible to the anti-viral actions of monoglycerides derived from coconut oil’s fatty acids.
To apply coconut oil to baby and mother, gently run coconut oil saturated fingers around baby’s mouth and let him or her suck on the oil to help get the coconut oil into and around the mouth and throat which are the affected areas. Mothers can also apply coconut oil directly to their nipples to provide relief to the mother and the infant.
To help the body rid itself of the infection, mom can also start to take coconut oil orally as a supplement. Start at a teaspoon a day to determine tolerance. It may cause diarrhea if taken too much at a time, especially if it is effectively killing off the yeast infection so quickly you get what is called ‘die off’. So, go slow and steady for best results.
Coconut oil contains three MCFA’s, as discussed in earlier chapters, which are all highly effective at killing all three strains of Candida albicans tested.
The Icelandic study showed that …capric acid, a 10-carbon saturated fatty acid, causes the fastest and most effective killing of all three strains of Candida albicans tested, leaving the cytoplasm disorganized and shrunken because of a disrupted or disintegrated plasma membrane. Lauric acid, a 12-carbon saturated fatty acid, was the most active at lower concentrations and after a longer incubation time.
3. Pediatric Atopic Dermatitis
A new double blind clinical trial and study of the chronic skin disease pediatric atopic dermatitis (AD) was recently conducted in Manila. The results were published in December of 2013 and demonstrate that coconut is highly effective in treating the condition. Coconut oil was found to be more effective than mineral oil by a statistically significant factor.
The study concluded that …among pediatric patients with mild to moderate AD, topical application of VCO for eight weeks was superior to that of mineral oil based on clinical (SCORAD) and instrumental (TEWL, skin capacitance) assessments
