Coconut Chai Tea

How’s about coconut chai tea? Traditional Indian Chai Tea is made with black tea, cardamom, cinnamon and star anise. It is also made with lots of sugar and very thick buffalo milk. A traditional chai tea recipe from India would look something like this:

  • Servings: 4
  • Prep Time: 10 minutes

Ingredients

  • 2 to 2 ½ cups water
  • 1 whole star anise
  • 1 stick cinnamon
  • 4 cardamom pods, cracked
  • 4-5 black tea bags, or ¼ cup loose black tea
  • 2 cups whole milk or half-and-half
  • ¼ cup sugar

Directions:

The spices and tea would be boiled in the water for up to five minutes, until the tea was very dark, and then the whole milk and sugar would be added and the tea re-heated until hot and served. For coconut chai tea, replace the whole milk with coconut milk.

Replace the sugar with coconut sugar. You can also use raw honey or maple syrup, but be sure to add them after the tea is served and once it has cooled slightly. Delicious. You can make chai tea with Rooibos tea (no caffeine) which is also very good.

Here are some of the other spices and ingredients people play with when making chai teas:

  • Vanilla bean
  • Black pepper corns
  • Fresh ginger
  • Whole cloves
  • Nutmeg (ground)
  • Allspice (whole)

Another way to prepare it is to boil the water, and pour it over the ingredients in a heat tempered glass or ceramic container. Cover and let stand for 10 minutes.

Pour through strainer into cups and add coconut milk and raw honey to taste. Optional: add one teaspoon of coconut oil to finished drink before serving.

No matter which method you use, chai tea is an easy and delicious drink and you can make it in so many great variations that it is almost endlessly interesting and different. We make up a spice mix in a regular spice jar and then add the whole cinnamon, cardamom and cloves etc. when we make the tea. No matter how you do it, it’s a great warm drink for cold winter nights.

Tip: Coconut Butter in Your Warm Beverages. If you’re a coffee or tea drinker you may want to try using coconut butter instead of cream in your hot beverage. You can make your own coconut butter by placing a cup or two of shredded dry coconut in your food processor and blending until it becomes thick. You can also get great coconut butter from Tropical Traditions.

They market their coconut butter as ‘Coconut Cream Concentrate’ and it is an excellent addition to hot beverages. They also have an excellent selection of great organic virgin coconut products and have done a lot to bring back the traditional virgin coconut processing methods that provide whole healthy coconut products.

Tip: Use Coconut Oil in Tea, as a Spread and for Cooking. Many people use a teaspoon of coconut oil in their tea each day as a way to get the healthy medium chain fatty acids into their diet. You can also mix it with butter for a spread, or cook with it.

When using it in tea, be careful to let the tea cool for a few minutes before adding the oil to reduce loss of nutritional value and avoid burning your lips (hot oil can burn much more intensely than hot water or tea, because it adheres to your skin).
