Providing protection from infections, conditioning and nourishing the skin are all important functions of a good skin butter or lotion. A scrub can be used to exfoliate the skin and invigorate the whole body from head to toes and is a great pick-me-up when times are stressful, you’re over worked or exhausted or just need an emotional lift.
However you use these great recipes and the lovely skin care products they produce, make a new practice of applying them often and liberally for glowing, healthy skin that keeps your whole being more vibrant and healthy. Essential Oils in Lotion Bars, Massage Bars, and Body Butters
Essential oils are potent, lovely additions to personal care recipes. They can stimulate clear thinking or make us cozy and drowsy, depending on the chosen aromas and combinations.
When making body lotions, lotion bars and body butters, the essential oils should not exceed ~ 2% solutions. A 2% solution is equal to 10 to 12 drops per ounce of lotion.
For massage oils, the solution should be about half that, or 5 to 6 drops of essential oil per ounce of massage oil in the recipe.
- For Lotions, Bars and Butters: Use a 2% Essential Oil Solution of 10 to 12 drops per ounce of carrier oil.
- For Massage Oils: Use a 1% solution of 5 to 6 drops per ounce of carrier oil.
- For best results use a food scale to weigh your ingredients.
It is important to remember that essential oils have differing qualities and some can be quite irritating to the skin, so choose your oils wisely.
I’ve included a chart below to help you select the best essential oils for your body scrub based on your skin type. A fairly standard list for oils that work well for all skin types might include geranium, lavender, rose, violet, patchouli, neroli, rosewood, sandalwood and white birch.
